With similar lux levels, the white LED street light seems brighter due to its higher colour rendering index (CRI) and objects illuminated can be identified clearly. Though HPS produces more lumens, objects are harder to identify because of low CRI. Therefore, LED lights with lower lux levels as HPS can achieve equivalent luminous effect.

As it indicates, the luminous effect of 120W LED street light (UNISTWF-0001) with about 145W actual power onsumption, equals 250W HPS street light that actually consumes about 290W.

Consumption of copper-core cable

Comparison of copper-core cable consumption by HPS and solar powered LED street lighting systemsA newly constructed 100 km long road in a city may need 1,430 pcs street lights at 35 m intervals mounted on 10 m high double-sided poles, with one lamp on each pole. Using 250W HPS lights (starting current up to 4.54A) and one transformer every 1.5 km, the power cable between lamp posts would be 4 x 35 mm2 copper core cable, priced around USD 15.56/m. The cable inside the poles would be 1 x 4 mm2 costing USD 2.00/m. Using LED street light would only require 4 x 10 mm2 cable between poles at USD 4.00/m, and 1 x 1.5 mm2 cable at USD 0.70/m inside the poles.

Comparison of the lifespan of HPS and solar powered LED street lightsGenerally speaking, the life span of an LED lamp is 2.5 times that of HPS lamps. HPS lamps normally need to be replaced every 2 years, while LED lamps are maintenance free for 5 years. This results in reduced maintenance cost.

LED lamps are driven by PWM, making intelligent control over timing, sound, optical, network, wireless and other controls easy.

Compared to HPS, a single solar powered LED light saves 550KWH electricity per year. If the electricity cost is 0.1 USD/KWH, it translates into a saving of USD 55.5 per year. At this rate, replacing 10,000 HPS lights in a city with LED will result in an annual saving of USD 555,000, reducing operation costs sharply.

Over 255.2 tonnes of copper can be saved using solar powered LED street lights for a new road. This is nearly 9.775 million RMB or USD 1.44 million. Moreover, LED requires less transformers and construction work. Although the cost of LED street lights is higher than conventional street light, the savings on cost of lamps, copper cable and transformers results in similar or lower construction investment with LED street light solutions, as compared to conventional lighting.

Impact on environment

Impact of HPS and solar powered LED street lights on the environmentBesides the economic benefits, LED street lighting also brings many social benefits. Replacing 10,000 pcs of HPS street lights with LED street lights will result in a saving of 5,550,000KWH of electricity. Less power consumption would result in a reduction of coal consumption, and bring down exhaust emissions such as sullfide and carbide.
